Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at Dusk Dances

Dusk Dances is an organization led by racialized artists.

We recognize that many communities have been historically excluded from dance, whether on stage, back stage, or in the audience.

As a publicly funded outdoor dance festival, it is our responsibility to present work that reflects the marginalized majority of the general public in Canada. To reflect the diversity of our city, Dusk Dance’s Strategic Plan outlines that we will program a minimum of 75% equity deserving artists, and that we will prioritize applications from equity deserving folks in our staffing.

The Festival Director uses the curatorial model, the flagship Toronto event, and special projects to engage a range of diverse voices at every level of the organization’s activities. Dusk Dances has an explicit goal to broaden the range of dance styles presented, artists engaged, and audiences reached in the years to come. We recognize that detailed benchmarking and measuring of progress in these areas is critical to positive change. During this period of artistic and organizational development, there will continue to be a rigorous process of self-reflection with respect to this work and the organization will engage external advisors when additional support is needed.

In 2020 Dusk Dances undertook a consultative process with Cultural Pluralism in the Arts Movement Ontario (CPAMO) and focus group reports and recommendations were delivered in 2021. This process informed our Strategic Plan 2023-2026, the IDEA cornerstone, and its development. Resulting from this work with CPAMO, Dusk Dances engaged Fanny Ghorayeb in a consultative relationship as Artist Advocate and Social Alignment Advisor. Upon Fanny’s departure in 2024, Uche Ama stepped into the role.

Dusk Dances recognizes that our relationships to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion are imperfect and ongoing. We believe the only way to engage in growth as part of our communities is to be open to ongoing feedback, and actively engage in ongoing self reflection regarding our biases. If you would like to connect with us to share your experience with our organization and help us improve our offerings, you are welcome to connect informally with Uche at uche(at)duskdances(dot)ca.
